"Top Gear" Eber 230 winner
Congratulations to Paul Ridley, from Air-Stream Wireless Inc, SA
Paul Ridley, a member of Air Stream Wireless Inc in South Australia, is our "Top Gear" competition grand prize draw winner.

His prize is a 'ducks guts' Eber 230, which includes 756MB of RAM, a 512MB CF card and a 12V 4A power supply, valued at over $1400.

You can read Paul's case study, "Using a WRAP 2 for a core access point in the Air-Stream community wireless network", on our case studies page.

Thanks to everyone who entered our "Top Gear" competition. Your "Yawarra" t-shirt and cap should be arriving shortly, if you haven't already received them.

We'll be publishing our case studies gradually over the next months, so stay tuned to find out how other people are using our hardware.

Happy Holidays
See you in 2007
Thank you for supporting us in 2006.

We wish you a safe and happy holiday season and look forward to seeing you again in 2007.

We won't be sending out any news in January, so the next time you'll hear from us will be in late February.

In the meantime, here are the important dates for our end-of-year period:

* Tuesday, 19 Dec, 1:00PM - The absolute latest you'll have to place (and pay for) your order by, if you want it to arrive before Christmas.

You'll need to order even earlier if you're outside of the Express Post area (ask us if you're not sure), or if it's a large order. Of course we'll happily process your last minute order, but we just can't guarantee it'll arrive in time. So get in early, OK?

* Wednesday 20 Dec, 5:30PM - When we close for our Christmas break.

* Wednesday 10 Jan, 9:00AM - When we reopen after our Christmas break.

You're more than welcome to place orders via the website during this period, but we won't be answering the phones, shipping orders, or responding to emails until we reopen.

Have a great holiday!

2. Anyone can enter
Don't think you have to be a business to enter our competition. The only requirement is that you're using our stuff. So whether you've used one of our computers to build a robot, or secure your home network, we want to hear about it.

3. We want to publish your case study
That's why we're running this competition, after all. So if you're worried your entry won't be accepted, don't be! We'll help you make sure it's good to go.

So what are you waiting for? Get cracking!

New net4801 case now available
Fit a full-height PCI card - and it's blue!
Powdercoated in gloss blue, our new net4801 case has a larger space on the left and has access to one serial port. The new case fits standard height PCI cards (up to 103mm), making it ideal for setting up a net4801 as an Asterisk box for VOIP.

Great work, Neville!

New products
This month we have new reverse SMA pigtails, which use higher-quality u.fl connectors, instead of I-PEX. And for the same price, too!

We have limited stock of the old I-PEX rSMA pigtails, which we'll ship when you order reverse SMA pigtails as an option, until they run out. If you specifically want u.fl pigtails, please let us know when you place your order, or just order them separately.

Price changes
We'll there's good news and bad news. Which do you want first?

OK, the good news is that we've been able to drop the price on our Senao 400mW miniPCI wireless cards to $160.

The bad news is that we've had to increase our shipping charges, but only a very little. Our charge for small orders (less than 500g) is now $10, instead of $9, but our other charges remain the same. Please visit our shipping information page to read more about our shipping charges.

Eber 230's finally in stock
Following some manufacturing delays - and unexpected demand - we finally have stock of the Eber 230's. Our apologies for the delay and thanks for your patience. Now go buy one!

Christmas & New Years information
Although we'll be sending another newsletter in mid-December (to announce the winner of the Eber 230), to help you plan ahead, here are the important dates for our end-of-year period:

Tuesday, 19 Dec, 1:00PM - The absolute latest you'll have to place (and pay for) your order by, if you want it to arrive before Christmas.

You'll need to order even earlier if you're outside of the Express Post area (ask us if you're not sure), or if it's a large order. Of course we'll happily process your last minute order, but we just can't guarantee it'll arrive in time. So get in early, OK?

OpenBSD have released their latest version, v4.0 of their open source operating system.

Visit our OS images page to download it or add it to your next order.

pfSense v1.01 released
Including a few minor bug fixes, v1.01 of pfSense is now the latest version of this open source firewall package that was officially released on October 13.

Visit our OS images page to download it or add it to your next order.

New electronic postcards
A big thank you to everyone who has filled out and returned one of our 'How Did We Do?' postcards in the past.

We have successfully trialled an electronic version of this survey, and as of 1 December 2006, we'll start sending this to all of our customers. Instead of the paper version, you'll receive an email a few days after your order with a link to a online version of the survey, saving you time and giving you more space to tell us what you think.

So when you receive your next order, don't think we've stopped caring what you think. We still do, and we look forward to hearing how we can make things even better for you!

New WRAP 1 case with SMA punchouts
27 October 2006
It's a case of design
New WRAP 1 cases with SMA punchouts
Hot off the presses (OK, the powdercoaters) are our new WRAP 1 cases that now include SMA punchouts - two for the WRAP 1-1 and one for the WRAP 1-2.

Just insert your rSMA pigtail, screw on your rSMA antenna, and you're done. No more drilling holes - for you or us! And if you don't want an antenna, just leave the rubber blanking plugs in for a very neat finish.

So far they're only available in red, but we'll be gradually moving all of our WRAP 1 cases across to the new design. Check out our case info page for more photos.

To get one, just select the 'red with SMA punchout' option when choosing the case colour for your next order.

New net4801 and Eber cases being developed
Neville testing a case prototype Meet Neville, our product engineer.

Neville's been working hard improving our case designs and you can see him here, testing a prototype for our new net4801 case.

Powdercoated in stunning 'space blue' with a larger space on the left and one serial port, the new case will fit - and give you access to - standard height PCI cards (up to 95mm), including the Digium TDM400 VOIP card.

Our new net4801 case will be ready next month, so keep watching. And did we mention it's blue?

And when that's all done, Neville's next task is to design standalone cases for the Eber series. Can't wait for that one.

New products
We're now offering the 12V 4A regulated power supply, designed for use with our rack mount Ebers, as a separate product.

Price changes
Due to rising copper prices, we've had to increase the price of our 12V 1A unregulated power supply to $20. Bummer, hey?

Product changes
Our PPOE injectors and PPOE kits are now called 'Passive POE' to distinguish them from 802.3af compliant active POE equipment.

And in case you weren't sure, our WRAP 1 and net4801 boxes don't include a pigtail or antenna when you select a wireless card in a miniPCI slot. If you want an rSMA pigtail or antenna, you'll need to buy them separately.

Our catalogue previously listed our Voyage O/S image as 256MB, instead of 128MB, which means that you can actually fit it onto a 128MB CF card if you want to. Our apologies for any confusion.

Extra bits
pfSense v1.0 finally released!
pfSense, the open source firewall derived from monowall, was officially released on October 13.

Utilising pf as the firewall basis, this distribution has been in development for two years and offers firewalling, traffic shaping, clustering, load balancing and more, all managed via an easy-to-use WebGUI.

Visit our OS images page to download it or add it to your next order.

Get more "grunt" with an Eber
Our new rack mount servers have arrived!
Exclusive to Yawarra, the stylish rack mount Ebers are an enterprise-grade solution for slightly larger networks and more complex tasks such as intrusion detection and spam filtering. Starting at just $950 for the Eber 210, the Ebers' low price and small size also make them ideal for running in a redundant cluster.

Completely fanless, quiet and cool, the Eber also has the capacity to support a standard hard drive for extra storage, file serving or logging. The ports are located at the front, not the back, allowing easy access for administrators and the CF card is tucked away securely under the board.

The rack mount aluminium enclosure has excellent heat dissipation properties and is only 190mm deep and 1RU high, which means that it will fit into the smallest of racks.

Read more about the Eber series on our new Eber product information page, size them up on our new Eber comparison page, or check out the Eber 210, the Eber 220 and the Eber 230 on the new rack mount page in the catalogue. There's also a quick comparison of the WRAP, net4801 and the Eber features on our small form factor computers page.

Switch into "Top Gear" and win!
Win a rack mount Eber worth over $1400
To celebrate the combined launch of our new range of Eber rack mount servers and our new case studies section of the website, we're offering one lucky bugger the chance to win a "ducks guts" Eber 230, valued at $1470.

To win, all you have to do is tell us how using our products has helped you or your business. For more information, visit our "Top Gear" competition page (under 'Case Studies' in the menu).

How 'bout those rack mount Ebers, hey?

Price changes
Our 1GB SanDisk CF cards are down by another $10 this month to a mere $55. Dropping like a stone...

Product changes
We've split our old 'computers' page in the catalogue into three - boxes, rack mount and boards - to accommodate our new range of rack mount Ebers.

We've also turned the old 'Rack mount server' into three separate products - dual rack mount WRAP 1-1, dual rack mount WRAP 1-2 and dual rack mount net4801 - and included two boards by default. You can still have the single board version by removing the second board.

We've completely run out of 256MB Biwin CF cards, and we won't be getting any more.

And our WRAP 2 boards are now all 233MHz, as the 266MHz processor is no longer being manufactured.

Extra bits
New case studies section
We've added a new section to our website, to help you see how other people are making use of our hardware.

We've kicked things off with our case study, which looks at using monowall on a WRAP 1-2 to create an easy hardware firewall, and we plan to add more to the collection (with your help). Read more on our case studies page.

World times now customisable
Our handy dandy 'World Times' popup is now customisable. Just click on the time in the lower left hand of any page on our website to show this surprisingly useful tool.
Click the 'Customise' link and select from hundreds of timezones from around the world to keep an eye on your special locations. Give them any name you like, click save, resize the window to suit, and have it all remembered.
Never have to try and figure out what time it is in Guatemala or Greenland again! Very cool.
Get started with wireless
We've added a page with a great introduction to wireless technology, which you'll find under 'Wireless' in the menu.
On our wireless info page you'll find a handy comparison of the popular 802.11 standards, a list of the things you'll need to get started, and links to some useful tools, like EIRP calculators and a dBm to Watt conversion table.
We don't claim to be experts, so please let us know if you find any errors or have suggestions for additional content.
What does this mean?
We've also started compiling a glossary of useful (and sometimes confusing) terms.
You'll also find 'What does this mean?' links to the glossary sprinkled throughout the website and we'll keeping adding to these over time. Just put your mouse over a word and see if it turns red, and then click to see a definition.
Please let us know if you think there's some other terms that should be in there, or if one of our definitions is just wrong.
OpenBSD and Voyage images updated

Very useful if it's 10m up a pole or on the other side of the planet!
Postage and handling charges tweaked
Increasing freight costs and our expanding product range have prompted us to review our shipping charges.
So now our postage and handling calculation in our online store takes into account the weight, size and value of your order. The good news is, it will still only cost you $9, $13 or $25, depending on the size of your order.
We still do custom quotes for offline orders. For more info, visit our Shipping Info page.

pfSense has arrived
Get it pre-installed or DIY
pfSense has released v1.0 BETA 2 and we're pleased to begin offering it as an option on all of our boxes and CF cards.
If you prefer, you can also download it from our OS images page and DIY.
pfSense is derived from monowall, but has a number of different goals, including packet filtering, using FreeBSD 6 as its base and being able to extend it with packages (although not yet on embedded systems).
It has a great WebGUI interface and there are some cool tutorials available on the pfSense website.
We think it's definitely worth a try.
Need less? Pay less!
64MB WRAP 2 board just $190
If you're looking for an inexpensive WRAP board, and you don't need more than 64MB of memory, then take a look at our new 266GHz / 64MB WRAP 2 board. Just select the 266GHz / 64MB option in the product pop-up and save.

If you use a variety of SMA connectors, you might be interested in our new SMA adapters. Available in 9 configurations, these adapters allow you to connect any two SMA ends. Just pick the combination you need, and you're all set!
We're now also offering N-male caps in 1, 5, or 10 packs. Made from nickel-plated brass, with a handy-dandy chain, these caps are great for protecting an unused N-type female pigtail from the elements.
Price changes
Our 64MB Biwin, 512MB SanDisk and 1GB SanDisk CF cards have come down in price, yet again!
Save $5 on the 64MB and 512MB cards and an amazing $25 on the 1GB cards. Where will it stop?!
Product changes
You can now get pfSense v1.0 BETA 2 pre-installed on any box or CF card.
Due to popular demand, we've added a monowall appliance bundle to the WRAP 1-2. Just click the 'm0n0wall appliance' link, and the decision-making is done. All you have to do is choose the colour. "What do you mean, you don't have purple?!"
If you can't afford to have your firewall fail, take a look at our pfSense-based redundant firewall bundle for the rack mount WRAP 1-2. Just click the 'Redundant firewall' link, and we'll put together a great set of hardware, with pfSense pre-installed.

If one's good, then two's better!
Build your ideal rack-mounted solution with our new rack mount server
Take your pick of boards and options to create the perfect rack-mounted system.
Here's what great about our rack mount server:
  • it's designed to fit two boards in one 19" 1RU rack mount case, making it ideal for redundant systems
  • the boards slot into slide rails for easy access to the board and Compact Flash card
  • you can choose slide rails and cover plates to suit single or dual WRAP 1-1, WRAP 1-2 or net4801 boards, and mix and match boards
  • it comes with a stylish black anodised face, with matching punched cover plates, hex screws and thumb screws, and a clear anodised body, so it's easy to use and it looks great
  • it's made from aluminium so it's light yet durable
  • and it's manufactured right here in Australia
So take a look. We think you'll be impressed.
There's also some great photos of it in action on our case info page.

New products
To complement our new WRAP 1-1, WRAP 1-2 and net4801 rack mount servers, we've added a slide rail kit to our range.
So if you buy a rack mount server (or case) now with just one board, you can come back at any time and get everything you need to quickly and easily add a second board.
Price changes
Our 512MB and 1GB SanDisk CF cards have come down in price, again. It's just one of those inevitabilities. What was once big is now small, and what was once expensive is now, well, less expensive.
Save $5 and $10 respectively when you pick up one of these fabulous flash cards.
Product changes
We've improved our rack mount server case even further, adding support for the net4801 board - literally! Along with the slide rails and cover plates, the net4801 option includes a custom-designed mounting plate for the board.
So now you can mix and match board slots to suit the WRAP 1-1, WRAP 1-2 and net4801 boards. Go crazy!
We've also "tweaked" the pricing on our rack mount server case to better reflect our new and improved design.

New Voyage Linux images for the Biwin CF cards
We've added two new Voyage Linux images, designed specially for the 256MB Biwin CF card, and addressing the propensity of certain hardware to report the CF card as /dev/hdb instead of /dev/hda.
Well, whether your hardware reports your Biwin CF card as /dev/hda or /dev/hdb, we now have an image to suit.
Visit our OS images page for more information.

And if you don't like the product you've built, just click 'Pack' and start all over again.
We've also turned our wireless kits, our direct connect CF to IDE adapters and our 1RU server cases into single products with more options.

Price changes
Our CF card reader is now only $23. So what's it going to be - a CF to IDE adapter or a CF card reader? Decisions, decisions!
Product changes
We've combined our boxes and packs into single products. Now you can pick all of the options you want in the one place - or choose a standard box or pack with a single click. We've also done the same with the wireless kits, the direct connect CF to IDE adapters, and the 1RU server cases.
We've decided to stop listing the reverse N-type pigtails and antennas on our website, but we still have some left, so ask us if you're interested in a bargain. At the rate these babies have been selling, we're sure to run out of stock any decade now!
CORRECTION: Our Senao 200mW miniPCI wireless card is actually Type 3A form factor, not Type 3B, as it was previously listed. Our apologies for any confusion.
